Dry Riesling 'Aurora' 2024

About the Wine: Ria’s Wine was established in 2022 by husband-and-wife duo Ria D’Aversa and Mike Penn in Hector, New York. They work with both estate fruit and purchased fruit, all sustainably farmed. The couple met at UC Davis, one of the top viticultural schools in the country, and after graduation focused on viticulture (Ria) and oenology (Mike), both working for producers in California, including well-known name Broc Cellars.

In 2021, they began looking toward the East Coast with the hope of finding a place to own and put down roots. They settled on Bagley’s Poplar Ridge, a property on the eastern side of Seneca Lake. The estate spans 40 acres, with 20 acres (~8 ha.) under vine, some vines up to 40 years old. Ria specializes in transitioning properties from conventional farming to organic, and they began that process this year while also planting grape varieties better suited to the climate and their approach.

This bottle is their first venture into Cayuga Lake, Riesling grapes from grower-friends at Lake Road Vineyards in King Ferry, New York. A fourth-generation farm, Lake Road is now stewarded by Ryan Fessenden, who planted vines on the western-facing slopes of Cayuga.

Harvested on October 11 and 17 at 21.2 brix, these grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed and left to settle overnight before being racked into stainless steel barrels. Fermentation began with a pied de cuve and indigenous yeast, allowing the wine to develop slowly and gently, then it spent six months aging on the lees with occasional stirring, building texture and depth.

A zippy, bone-dry Riesling with a honeydew and velvety kiwi fruit profile, underscored by a hint of nutmeg spice. It opens beautifully with a quick shake or gentle decant, and will last at least four days in the fridge!
